Welcome to the North West Events and Information Newsletter for April 2008
After an early and leisurely Easter break it's back to business. The region is flourishing with conferences, seminars, courses and networking opportunities. First on the agenda is The Next Big Thing, Liverpool University's SME Milkround Initiative. Next we have the UK's first Sales Training Breakfast Club, run by Outstanding Results. Salford University is hosting a breakfast event (Driving Transformational Change for
Employer Engagement) to investigate how higher education can better work with industry to provide employer-led education and training. Elevation 08 is back, and billed as ‘the business conference for people who hate conferences’, is set to be a lively and informative event. And lastly, if you feel that your computer skills could do with a brush up, check out what the Women's Electronic Village Hall has to offer.

The ‘next big thing’ for your business – taking advantage of the University of Liverpool’s SME Milkround Initiative.
The ‘Next Big Thing’ is a University of Liverpool’s specially designed programme aimed at equipping their most enterprising students with the skills, knowledge, networks and expertise to spot opportunities, be innovative and show commercial awareness, and part of the objective, involves the SME Milkround Initiative.
‘The Milkround’ is the name popularly given to the annual graduate recruitment programme, whereby national employers from a wide range of industrial and commercial sectors visit the University of Liverpool to recruit graduates who have applied for their vacancies.
However, the Careers & Employability Service at the University recognises that recruiting a graduate doesn’t come cheap, with even the basic conventional recruitment process costing, probably, in region of £3,000.
Therefore for many SMEs, the process of recruiting a graduate could put an additional strain on the business, in terms of devoting staff time, resources and money that isn’t always readily available.
So the University of Liverpool’s Careers and Employability Service in partnership with the Next Big Thing and npower has secured European Social Funding enabling them to provide a free recruitment support service to SMEs on Merseyside who want to recruit a graduate this summer.
This initiative will involve the Careers & Employability Service, carrying out a full recruitment function, in terms of advising on job descriptions, administrating and profiling vacancies, handling the interest, collating suitable CVs, organising interviews, providing interview facilities and feedback to unsuccessful candidates, leaving the SME to just concentrate on conducting the interviews.
So what are you waiting for?
To find out more about the SME Milkround Initiative contact Paul Cullinan/Stefan Melgaard, at the University of Liverpool Talent Team, Careers & Employability Service - Tel: 0151 794 5847/5112

Breakfast Event -
Driving Transformational Change for
Employer Engagement
Tuesday 15 April, 8am - 10am
Breakfast Provided
Venue: Salford Innovation Forum
The future success of the North West regional economy will increasingly depend upon having a workforce equipped with higher level skills.
The Leitch Review (Dec 06) recommends that the UK commit to becoming a world leader in skills by 2020. The Review also recommends that the focus of Higher Education be expanded to focus on workforce development and that funding be demand-led. The aspiration of such a demand led system will rely on Higher Education Institutes understanding the skills needs of employers and working together to design education and training for their organisation's future success.
The University of Salford is widely regarded as one of the UK's leading enterprising universities, currently investing over £130m in state-of-the-art buildings and facilities. In recognition of an excellent track record working with Industry the University is delighted to announce that it has been awarded almost £3m from the Higher Education Funding Council for England to be used for a two-year project.
Driving Transformational Change for Employment Engagement Project
The project will investigate how higher education can better work with industry to provide employer-led education and training that can be delivered in the workplace.
The Breakfast Event will introduce the aims of the project to employers and major stakeholders. Delegates will also have the opportunity to hear more about the project and more importantly how they can get involved.
Guest Speakers
Dr. Lis Smith, Director of Skills Policy NWDA
Simon Caunt, Assistant Director CBI NW

Prepare to be ‘Elevated’!
Over 350 owner–managers and directors from businesses across Manchester and the North West will fill New Century House on 24th April as Elevation ’08 takes place.
The conference, now in its 6th year, is jointly hosted by City Centre law firm, George Davies Solicitors LLP and Worsley based Champion Accountants, but, they are quick to assure would-be delegates, there won’t be anything as mundane as law and accountancy on the agenda!
Elevation ’08, which is being supported by EN, is set apart by a fierce commitment to something very special and rare. Most business conferences focus on content, but they can be very dry affairs. The conference creates an unforgettable 'vibe', guaranteed to put our delegates in the mood to listen, receive vital information and move forward with their businesses. Billed as ‘the business conference for people who hate conferences’ and with former surprise guests such as the singing waiters and Ali G, it’s certainly a little more lively than your average seminar!
Keynote speakers, Steve Cram, MBE, world record holder and TV presenter and Nick Leeson, Barings Bank’s “Rogue Trader” will be joined by Keith Warren, communication expert and Dennis Turner, the City economist whose entertaining and innovative take on the country’s economy made him such a hit last year that he’s back by popular demand.
“The day promises to be one delegates will not forget in a hurry,” says George Davies’s managing partner, Mark Hovell. “It’s like no other business conference I have ever attended. The best thing is you get to spend an invaluable opportunity to work on your business rather than in it.”
“The entire day is about taking a step back, rediscovering your enthusiasm,” Hovell added.
Hosted by Granada Tonight’s Lucy Meacock and with a wine quiz from local wine expert Charlie Womersley plus yet more surprise guests, it certainly promises to be a conference with a twist!
Individual tickets cost just £200 plus VAT which includes a 3 course lunch and 2 networking breaks. The conference is also eligible for 5 hours CPD. For more information or to book your place go to www.elevation08.com or call Lucy Woods on 0161 234 8856.
