Welcome to the North West Events and Information Newsletter for February 2008
Hello and welcome to the February newsletter.
There are a number of conferences taking place over the next couple of months, including the City of Liverpool Business Fair, Halton Business Fair and the British Chambers of Commerce Conference. So there will be ample opportunity for North West businesses to meet potential suppliers and customers, attend seminars and network. Also this month Acas and Trowers & Hamlins Solicitors will be running a mock tribunal workshop and Acas has announced its calendar of events for the coming months.
The worthy St Ann's Hospice is promoting its Make a Will Week event which will take place between 3rd and 7th March. Mark Greenwood of the hugely successful Networking4Business has kindly agreed to share his wealth of knowledge and set aside some of your fears about networking. The Skills to Enable Community Learning Programme is offering free IT courses to women/men working or volunteering in the voluntary or community sector.
And after all of that if you're still feeling energetic, join Hollyoaks' Emma Rigby and the Five Star Scanner Appeal on a 5km run around Heaton Park.

"Your Day In Court" - A Mock Tribunal Workshop
What to expect and how to survive it!
21 February 2008 - The Bridgewater Hall. Manchester
In 2006/2007 over 132,000 claims were lodged at employment tribunals, a 15% increase on the previous year. Appearing as a witness in tribunal proceedings and justifying your decision making process can be a daunting prospect even if they are confident they have reached the right decision. For many this may be their first experience of a courtroom setting.
A one day workshop delivered jointly by Trowers & Hamlins Solicitors and Acas will take you through an interactive role play based on a real life case. You will get the chance to question and assess the evidence and reach a decision. That decision will then be tested in a mock tribunal.
The workshop draws on the extensive experience of both Trowers & Hamlins and Acas to guide you through tribunal practice and procedure in a practical and informative setting. Delegates will have an opportunity to take part in the role play, the cross examination of witnesses and vote on the outcome. A full time chairman of the employment tribunal will preside over the mock tribunal and take part in a chairman's question time.
Who should attend the workshop?
HR professionals, employee representatives and any manager with line management responsibility who is likely to be involved in dealing with disciplinary issues.
What you will gain from the workshop?
- Understanding how tribunal claims are lodged and processed
- Understanding the role of Acas in mediation and conciliation
- Understanding how tribunals assess evidence
- Understanding the importance of case preparation
- How to deal with cross examination
- Gaining an insight into the chairman's perspective

The Three Biggest Fears Of Networking
The three biggest fears of networking are entering the room, who should I talk to once in and what should I talk about. If you suffer from any of these, the good new is you are normal!! Everybody at networking events has some level of nerves, it is natural.
Firstly, remember all at a networking event are there for the same reason, so don't be nervous. When you walk into the room how many people are actually going to notice that you have just entered? Unless you are planning on making a dramatic entrance, then you can count the number of people on the fingers of one hand. Before you enter, shoulders back, take a big deep breath and enter the room confidently.
So once you are in the room who should you talk to? Again this is simple, the easiest option is look for those stood on their own! They will be grateful to you for taking them out of the uncomfortable position of being stood on their own when most others are engrossed in conversations. And who knows, they may thank you by passing you a referral or some business in the future.
But what if there are no delegates stood on their own? Then approach people who are talking but are stood more shoulder to shoulder than nose to nose. Without going into the 'ins' and 'outs' of body language, this situation reads that at least one person already in the conversation is very much open to another person joining them.
So you're now in the conversation but what should you talk about as you have been told not to sell too much when out networking? Easy again! Introduce yourself, acknowledge the other people, stay silent for a moment and pick up the topic of conversation. Do NOT hijack the conversation, simply join in where appropriate.
If you have no interest in the present conversation, listen intently as the conversation will evolve onto a subject where you have some common ground. If the conversation has come to a natural end when you join them, then use some 'small talk' such as 'How have you got here today?' or 'Have you been here long?' or 'Isn't the weather terrible/lovely?' If you want to turn the conversation to business try 'So what line of business are you in?' or 'Is business well?
The three fears above stem from the fear of rejection, but don't worry about that either! If another person refuses your request to join their conversation do you really want to get to know them or do business with them in the future anyway? By saying no to your request they will do more harm to themselves than you. Simply exit politely and move on to the next conversation.
